After finding her working as a department store salesclerk, Broadway producer Oscar Jaffe makes Lily Garland a star. The two fall in love, only to have their temperamental personalities drive them apart, sending Lily to Hollywood where she takes the town by storm. Without Lily, Oscar's career languishes. So when he finds they are both on board the Twentieth Century Limited, Oscar sets out to convince her to star in a new show.
