Children prove to be knowledgeable norns: Out of their version of a legendary tale emerges the "game of envy" between the gods and men, referred to by the giant Fafner in the second scene of The Rhinegold. The main players in this game are Alberich and Wotan, the figures of darkness and light, who are so bitterly opposed to each other and yet are so similar in their lust for power. For the entire "ring in weimer" this first central confrontation between the two uncompromising antagonists is of major importance as a leitmotiv, running like a thread through the entire plot of the Weimar Ring in every changing guise. As the plot develops, the desperate attempts of the children and grandchildren of Wotan and Alberich move into focus. The tale concerns an eternal generational conflict that affects each and every one of us.
